These snickerdoodles are so easy and you can make them today!

Snickerdoodle cookies are a popular American treat that is loved for its soft and chewy texture and delicious cinnamon sugar flavor. These cookies are typically made from a simple dough of butter, sugar, eggs, and flour, but what sets them apart is the addition of cream of tartar, which gives them a distinctive tangy flavor and helps to activate the baking soda.

After the dough is mixed, it is rolled into small balls and then coated in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar before being baked in the oven. The result is a lightly golden-brown cookie with a crackly surface and a tender, moist interior that is lightly scented with cinnamon.

Snickerdoodles are often enjoyed during the holiday season, but they are also a popular choice year-round for their comforting and nostalgic flavor. They are perfect for sharing with friends and family, and they pair well with a cup of tea or coffee for a cozy afternoon treat.

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • For rolling:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons ground cinnamon

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon for rolling.
  6. Roll the dough into balls, about 1 1/2 tablespoons each. Roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar mixture, coating well.
  7. Place the balls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 7-9 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Enjoy warm or at room temperature, and store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
Makes about 24-30 cookies
